Attic Condition Dixon Nelson & Company
Rifle/Musket - A Holy Grail of Confederate Collecting
Manufactured by the Shakanoosa Arms Company, less than 1000 of these fine rifles were made. Most, if not all,
went to the State of Alabama troops. It is .58 caliber. The barrel length is 33 inches with a total length of 48
inches. The lock is marked ALA/1864 to the rear of the hammer and DIXON/NELSON & CO. below the bolster
and ALA 1864 on the left side of the barrel just in front of the breech. All the furniture is a wonderful coppery
brass with a red-ish patina that one would expect of a poor quality high copper alloy. The wood shows the normal
dings and cracks that one would expect of a true battle gun. Oh, if only this rifle could talk! Dixon Nelson
firearms were originally made in Dixon, Alabama. The armory was subsequently moved to Rome, Adairsville and
finally to Dawson, all in Georgia. An ultra rare Confederate weapon for the most sophisticated collection.
